In contemporary society it is inevitable that the millions of images surrounding us engage in extensive and complex cross-referencing. Images presuppose other images; they refer to each other, cite and parody each other. Reality and fiction, original and copy are barely distinguishable. And when fiction poses as reality and the copy sets out to erase every reference to the original it becomes virtually impossible to tell the difference. The game then becomes bitter earnest. The intricate interplay that photographic images engage in and the interaction between reality and fiction is examined in this issue.
