ABOUT THE WORK
Justin James Reed considers himself landscape photographer in many ways, however, his approach is quite unconventional. He shoots his subjects at relative close range using a small aperture to increase the depth of field. Reed flattens space and casts every element on an equal plane in a kind of democratisation of the landscape. This results in hyper-real images with frame-filling compositions and innumerable details.

At a glance, Reed’s images of weather-worn and aged tree trunks, rough sided rocks, and gnarled branches could be etchings or charcoal drawings on paper –such is the density of tone and craftsmanship on display. The depth of the scenes presented and the intricate detail of the surfaces he explores are meticulously rendered through his large format camera. Reed’s pictures form an exploration of the surface of photography; the subjects almost seem to break through the smooth surface of the photograph.

Reed is keen to avoid creating images that are purely representational. He prefers creating pictures that have their own meaning – that speak for themselves, but aren’t about something specific as such. A striking example is the untitled image of tar in a parking lot that is part of the series  In heaven the darkness is quite beautiful, the title of which is inspired by David Lynch’s film Eraserhead, The striking swirls of black tar stand out against a grainy grey background – the areas of light and dark carefully balanced in a delicate equilibrium, providing a tension that is central to the image’s make-up

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Justin James Reed (b. 1980, United States) is based in Richmond, Virginia. His work and artists' books have been exhibited widely, including at Higher Pictures (New York), Carroll and Sons (Boston), Arnhem Mode Biennale (Arnhem), Depot II Gallery (Sydney), Lille DSV (Copenhagen), and the Maison d'art Bernard Anthonioz (Nogent-sur-Marne). His work is held in numerous collections, most notably the Library of Congress, Yale University Art Gallery, The New York Public Library, and MoMA Library. He is a member of the international collective, Piece of Cake, co-publisher at Brooklyn based Horses Think Press, and an Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, School of the Arts.
