Foam Magazine #11: Young

This issue focuses on diverse ways in which youngsters feature as the subject of photographic series’ and projects. Young people have always been a source of inspiration for photographers but in recent years there has been an increase in this focus. This issue presents six portfolios from six photographers who capture what it is to be Young.

Documenting the dark heart of an insidious mental illness in Thin, Lauren Greenfield looks at the lives of teenage patients in treatment for eating disorders in residential facilities in the US. On the other end of the spectrum, Ryan McGinley’s Celebrating Life is featured, taken during the summer of 2005 this series captures groups of friends travelling around America in the spirit of the classic road trip. Since 2002 Viviane Sassen has travelled to East and South Africa recording representations of otherness concerning gender, physical ability or ethnicity in Flamboya.

Also included, an extensive interview with Brett Rogers the Director of The Photographer’s Gallery, discussing the gallery’s change of location and the role of specialized contemporary photographic institutions. Plus an ‘On My Mind’ feature from 6 cultural figures talking about images on their minds and plenty of book reviews.
