ABOUT THE WORK
With this picture of circus artists, August Sander takes up a theme often dealt with in painting. Yet he does not show sensational feats or the magical world of the circus ring, but concentrates instead on the people who work in a circus during the breaks they take together. The portfolio Traveling People – Fair and Circus also includes other photographs that were taken on the same occasion. As Sander took a picture of a woman holding a program for the ‘Riesen-Circus Barum’, we know the name of this famous circus.
ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
August Sander (1867-1964) is famous for the extensive series of portraits from the project Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts (People of the 20th Century). With this extensive collection, Sander attempted to portray all walks of life in the first half of 20th-century Germany. In December 2006, Foam presented a retrospective of work by August Sander.
