Foam Magazine #30: Micro

A close focus on the photographic subject is comparable to looking through a microscope: while losing sight of your surroundings, you become immersed in an unknown world suddenly revealed to you. Embracing the theme of Micro visually, this issue also looks to appreciate the smaller phenomena within our surroundings and habits.

Featuring The Wedding, a series taken from the larger project Case History by Boris Mikhailov, The Wedding focuses on two homeless people, only a man and a woman. Exhibiting their simulated wedding as the last survivors, at one another´s mercy the greater picture is rendered by this tiny slice of life. Outside In by Stephen Gill is a project refined by its technical restrictions and multi layered narrative. This series´ limitations playfully produces an intimate microscope on the English seaside town of Brighton. Anatomizing the form of images, Joris Jansen re-photographed various regions of a photographs surface at high magnifications in Kosmos, a series of microphotographs that produce no immediate recognition but an abstract surface. This issue observes that by the action of zooming in, ultimately means closing off the rest of the world…

Also included, an extensive interview with French artist Sophie Calle giving an rare insight to her deeply personal and affecting work. Plus an ‘On My Mind’ feature from 6 cultural figures talking about images on their minds and plenty of book reviews.
