This issue explores one of the most important genres in the history of photography, street photography. An immensely rich visual source, capturing a split second faster than the eye can perceive, irrevocably changed photography and people’s awareness of the world. Sidewalk aims to investigate how this major development translated into contemporary photography.

Showcasing six portfolios from six photographers who each have their own idiosyncratic affinity with city life. Observing people and their comings and goings on his two-hour busy journeys, Tom Wood eventually took multiple bus trips every day purely to capture the daily lives of the people of Liverpool. Raymond Depardon made seven films and a volume of photographs about all seven cities he had a love/hate relationship with, confronting his idea of seeing. Created during his lunch break from an important midtown cultural institute Gus Powell’s The Company of Strangers centres on New York Times Square sticking to the pathological corporate cliché of urban renewal.

Plus, by special request of Foam Magazine six people use their camera phones to photograph street life in their home city over the course of a weekend, Sidewalk features the results.
