ABOUT THE WORK
This work is inspired by the playfulness of Rio de Janeiro, the hometown of Alice Quaresma. "Cariocas", Rio civilians, are known for their good vibes and improvisation capability as the city structure many times fails to delivery the basics. The work brings a sense of playfulness. She cuts out different parts of images to create works with utopian and dysfunctional qualities.
ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Alice Quaresma was born in Brazil in 1985 and currently lives in New York. On her CV are the PS122 Exhibition Prize (2009), Foam Talent Prize (2014), Caixa Cultural São Paulo Open Call (2018), Aperture Foundation Summer Open (2019) and Houston Center for Photography Annual Exhibition (2019). Quaresma had her first institutional solo exhibition in 2018 at Caixa Cultural (São Paulo, Brazil), after graduating from Pratt Institute (New York) in 2009. Since 2006 her work has been part of exhibitions and residency programs in the USA, Europe and South America. At the same time she has created special projects for brands like Hermès, Air France, Red Bull and Samsung.
Quaresma has been experimenting with materials that allow her photographs to be sensorial and playful, pushing the boundaries of photography as a flat surface. She uses images from her personal photo archive to elaborate on the idea of displacement and identity. The painted lines over the images break the perfection of the camera and bring the beauty of the hand gesture to the foreground, the work questions photography’s rigid assertion of objectivity. Queresma uses her fascination for the ocean as a place of discovery. She explores the ludic world of photography experimenting with the condition of a work in progress, bringing less rational qualities to her photographs.
