ABOUT THIS WORK
Another Online Pervert derives from a series of conversations between artist Brea Souders and a female AI chatbot. These conversations are interspersed with entries from Souders’ diary spanning twenty years, unfolding with a surprising and improvisational quality in combination with photographs from Souders’ archive. With this personal and provocative project, we are guided through a unique exploration of how a machine and a human can learn from one another and build a shared story from pieces of themselves.

The project examines intersections between technology, intimacy, womanhood, and how personal meaning can be explored in the context of this new, AI-mediated world. Through Souders’ chatbot conversations, we step into a world of questions: about love, sexuality, death, disappointment, the sky, seeing, desire, and anxieties of the body. Within the space of their correspondence, dazzlingly surreal and poetic tangents are combined with the material realities of the bot and its connections to capitalism, the future of technology, and the slippery divide between being and non-being.

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Brea Souders is an American artist working in photography, text and collage, often blending digital phenomena with physical objects and the handmade. Her recent work explores concepts of selfhood, anonymity, and the virtual “other” within web-based culture. Looking at the historical and ongoing imprints of technology through a female lens, she examines its impact on our bodies, identities, and perceptions of the world around us. She is the author of the books Another Online Pervert, (MACK, 2023) and Brea Souders: Eleven Years (Saint Lucy Books, 2021).

Souders has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, including solo exhibitions at Baxter St. at CCNY, Bruce Silverstein Gallery and the Abrons Arts Center in New York, among others. Essays and reviews of her work have appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Artforum, Frieze, i-D, and The New Yorker. She is currently faculty with the International Center of Photography, and previously taught at Parsons / The New School.

The work of Souders is part of the group exhibition Missing Mirror, which is on display at Foam until September 2024. Her portfolio is also published in Foam Magazine #66: Missing Mirror, with the same theme: AI.
