ABOUT THE WORK
"At the start of the year, when the pandemic worsened in Europe, Ayivi returned from London to her family in Germany. There she began Heimat (In Quarantine), an experimental series of images of her two brothers. In a double portrait, both sit shirtless, one in front of each other, heads wrapped and turned towards the camera. Tenderness and the bravado of adolescence are present in Ayivi’s portrayal. Her strong colour sense balances their black and red head scarves with the colours of the wall behind to create a graphic composition. In another striking image, a brother stands in strong sunlight. His hands, sheathed in scarlet boxing gloves, hold sprays of yellow forsythia flowers which sing against the deep blue backdrop. Colours, once again, combine to harmonious effect."

Text by Sophie Wright in Foam Magazine #58, the Talent issue.
