ABOUT THE WORK
Dima Komarov’s creative practice is fluid. He takes photos, produces hand-made zines, books and collages, draws, and occasionally writes poetry or makes music. In the social and economic context of contemporary Russia, his creativity is a labour of love – there are very few ways of making a living with any of these activities. Photographed in the streets, roaming the countryside, or in the intimacy of their bedrooms, Dima Komarov’s peers seem fierce and fearless. The search for their identity is political. In the softness and joy of Komarov’s shots, it is evident that their values of self-expression, inclusivity and freedom are radically different from those of the Russian establishment. Komarov’s photography, in this sense, is an enchanted territory: their own kingdom to rule.
