ABOUT THE WORK
It’s not easy to define the work of Fleur van Dodewaard. With her fascination for the space between different disciplines, she researches the link between photography and the art of sculpture and painting. Her sculptural compositions are made from different materials with geometric and abstract shapes where she creates clear and powerful images that prove to be a lot more complex than appeared at first glance.

Van Dodewaard questions subjects like authenticity, reproduction and representation:’’I feel that almost everything in the world has a function, a definition, a fence. The reason my work is not easy to grasp is because I am searching for the exact opposite of that.’’

With the title of the work  L’Origine du Monde (The origin of the world) Fleur refers to the provocative nude painting of the French artist Gustave Courbet (1866). ‘’Besides the literal reference to the female genitals and the creation of new life, there is something else what is important with this image: the play, the imagination as the origin of everything.’’ By combining art historical links with her recognizable visual language, Van Dodewaard emphasises on her critical vision of the medium of photography. This leads to a tension that will surprise the viewer constantly.
