ABOUT THE WORK
The urban environment and the spaces Marleen Sleeuwits portrays seem unspoken. The locations are the ones which we do not notice and cannot reach because of their hermetic nature. Sleeuwits gives them a face and at the same time points to the carefully formulated design concepts that have been made for these spaces. For example, with aesthetic working of light and use of colour she shows that beauty also lies in the everyday.

Marleen Sleeuwits - 2013: ‘At the moment I work in a large abandoned office building. All spaces in the building consist of drywall partitions and dropped ceilings. In one of the rooms I drilled 3,500 holes. It was a very dusty activity that took me about two months. This photo shows about half of the room. I think it is interesting to work with materials that are already present in the building. Often these are cheap, non-sustainable materials such as paste tiles, insulation or laminate flooring. For that reason, the interiors often have the quality to quickly change identity. Often I peel off these materials in a space or I add new layers in order to show more of them.’
