Marrigje de Maar - Xinjiang-Kazakh Party Tent, China, 2007

Signed, titled, dated and numbered on a label
40 x 50 cm
Edition of 8

Marrigje de Maar only shoots interiors. For this she travels all over the world. To her interiors are a kind of portrait. It seems that only within our own four walls we feel safe enough to be ourselves. People create their personal spaces with the help of daily utensils, memorabilia and things they like or which embody their dreams.

During her travels she boldly rings on doors and asks permission to come in. In this way she gets admittance to the real daily life, rather than to living spaces which are specially prepared to be photographed.

You seldom find people in her pictures. Only in this way the viewer can move freely around in the space. Perhaps recognizing also something of themselves.

Marrigje de Maar graduated from the Art Academy Minerva in Groningen, the Netherlands in 2004. In 2005 and 2007 she travelled three times to China. Her work is regularly exhibited in the Netherlands and abroad. Her work has been nominated and granted several photography awards, such as the Lucie Award, New York and Dutch Press, Silver Camera for Foreign Documentary Series in 2004.

Work by Marrigje de Maar is included in several public collections, such as Huis Marseille, Amsterdam, Victoria & Albert Museum Londen, Portland Art Museum, Oregon and Foam Amsterdam.
