ABOUT THE WORK
This work is a spread from the book China is a big Moldova from Olya Oleinic (1991), which was published as part of a research project and exhibition in Foam September – December 2016. For this exhibition titled Made of China, Oleinic researched one of the main driving forces of our contemporary advertising aesthetics: China. In 2016 she travelled to China two times to deepen this research. Documenting her observations with a pocket camera, Oleinic captured everything that struck her while scouring the cities’ streets. The fast changes disrupting traditional life in China reminded Olya of her motherland Moldova, a country that used to be communist but is transitioning to a more consumerist culture. In her book she combines her daily observations captured during her trips to China with small notes, poetic phrases, inner voices and murmurs of memories of her childhood in Moldova. These two photos don’t show a street view but a poetic detail that defined the Chinese surroundings.

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Olya Oleinic (1991) was born and raised in Moldova. In 2010 she started her studies Photography and Design at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (NL). In 2014 she won the Steenbergen Stipendium with her graduation project Universal Guide to Everything. The majority of her work made after her graduation was made in commission, applying advertising aesthetics in her photography to create appealing visual messages. The globalizing consumer culture and its advertising aesthetics form a recurring theme throughout her artistic career.
