ABOUT THE WORK
"For this photo from the series Coathangers for Doingbird we have shown the various designers without using the real clothes. They have become installations that interlock and stick together. This collection ‘the emperor’s clothes’ is not about keeping in step with fashion images that often try to get the onlooker’s attention with a lot of fanfare, but it is a more subdued and sober view on fashion by just naming the designer’s logos found on the hangers.” - Liesbeth Abbenes.
ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHERS
The oeuvre of the photographers duo Maurice Scheltens and Liesbeth Abbenes contains still lives in which materiality and form play an important role. Subjects vary from folded shirts, tapestries and delicate flowers to room filling installations of furniture. The whole working process – from concept to implementation – takes place in the studio. With a sense of subtlety they manufacture settings in which objects are continuously being rearranged or assembled to the perfectly balanced image. Scheltens & Abbenes continuously research the possibilities photography offers to create remarkable illusions.
Maurice Scheltens (b. 1972) and Liesbeth Abbenes (b. 1970) know how to combine their backgrounds – photographer and visual artist – successfully. Technical perfection
and skilled craftsmanship results in a strong pictorial clarity and careful styling. With their characteristic view, Scheltens & Abbenes create for both cultural institutions and companies (Vitra, Nike, Hermes, Viktor & Rolf) and editorials for magazines (Fantastic Man, Wallpaper*, Another Magazine).
