Foam Magazine #25: Traces

This issue is about the past in the present, a photo records an event or moment from a time in the past that is completed. Eight portfolios have been selected that represent the photo as a trace of absence. A photograph shows us what was, whereas the photo itself is. As an object and representation, a photograph has an existence all its own, acquiring its own history.

Ishiuchi Miyako photographed the remains of clothing worn by atom bomb victims in her series Hiroshima. Willem Popelier chronicles the lives of himself and his twin brother in the project ¬¬¬__ and Willem, censoring the unapproved work which is presented as photographic facts. The La Brea Matrix is also featured in this issue, a combination of six German photographers who travelled to Los Angeles in order to discover new perspectives previously shown in Stephen Shore’s iconic images.

Also included, an extensive interview with Diane Dufour, director of Le Bal speaking to Marc Feustel about the relationship between the real and the possible ways of representing it. Plus an ‘On My Mind’ feature from 6 cultural figures talking about images on their minds and plenty of book reviews.
