ABOUT THE WORK
Big Daddy Kane (b. 1968, US) is an American rapper who began his career in 1986 as a member of the Juice Crew. He later became an influential figure in the world of hip-hop, as a rapper, MC and entertainer. He received several gold albums and awards for his music, with multiple hit songs, such as “Ain’t No Half Steppin'”, "Raw" and "Smooth Operator".  This image of Big Daddy Kane was shot in New York City in 1988, as part of a photo shoot for the cover of Beckman's first book "Rap! Portraits and Lyrics of a Generation of Black Rockers" (1991), which she co-published with Bill Adler. It was the very first photography book about rap music, with which Beckman and Adler captured influential rap figures of the time. This black and white portrait of Big Daddy Kane shows the rapper from the side, up close, with his gaze averted, giving the image an intimate and calm character. Eventually, the photograph was not chosen as the cover image, yet it did get featured in the book.
