ABOUT THE WORK
This image is part of Kwabena’s Golden Boy series. a series heroing Black boys and young men in their day-to-day lives. By researching and delving into their realities, capturing behaviours and interests, he documents their true essence in a dignified way and equates them to riches and beauty, just as we do with gold.
"Nowhere are sentiments of tenderness more pronounced than in Appiah-Nti’s Golden Boy, an ongoing compendium of images that stretches across Brazil, Ghana, France, the Netherlands, and Suriname, among other countries. Began in 2018, the project consists of nearly one hundred photographs of primarily black male subjects engaged in leisure and play: swimming in waterfalls, riding motorcycles, playing football on beaches, or assuming stylised poses before the camera. This ‘boy stuff,’ as Appiah-Nti puts it, functions as a kind of global unifier among the black youth he photographs, irrespective of socioeconomic background, or locally specific cultural norms and value systems. The series emerged organically."

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Kwabena Appiah-nti (Belgian-Ghanian, b. 1994) aka, Sekyi, is a fashion and documentary photographer based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
In 2017, Sekyi completed his studies in communication & design, so he could receive approval from his parents and pursue his passion: photography. In his first years as an imagemaker he became fascinated by those in society who are often negatively perceived, misunderstood, and stereotypically portrayed - a group he describes as the ‘underdogs’. By delving into their world, researching and capturing their behaviour, he aims to present the authentic expressions and essence of his subjects.
Kwabena Appiah-nti was one of the Foam Talents of 2021.
