ABOUT THIS WORK
The series of still lifes & self portraits is manifested in both an installation and a publication. With her work, De Boer exposes the different layers of gender, on both a personal and social level. She enters into a dialogue with herself and the objects around her through black and white still lifes and self portraits. The play of light and shadow in her black and white compositions creates new symbols. The fluid dimensions of femininity in all its forms are unraveled. De Boer is not looking for answers, but for freedom, regardless of social expectations.
ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Loes de Boer (1999, NL) graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in 2024 with her graduation work still lifes & self portraits. In her work she investigates the versatility of identity and explores boundaries that are often seen as fixed. Deconstruction is at the core of her working method. For her graduation project she was inspired by photographers from feminist movements, sometimes with surrealist influences. The camera serves as an instrument for her to explore herself, with each photo capturing a moment of transformation. For De Boer, photography is a form of self-reflection, in which the extraordinary comes to the surface from within. Her work moves between different disciplines such as fashion, art, music and media.
Most recently, her images were published on the cover of and inside of Het Altijd (2024), a publication by nightclub De School (Amsterdam).
