ABOUT THIS WORK
The series Blue Mood (Al Mar) delves into the emotional landscape of adolescent men, drawing inspiration from Sanders' personal memories and stories of his friends and family. It serves as a sequel to his graduation work, Come Home, and features a cast of characters whom he guides through the transformative journey into adulthood. One of these characters is the younger brother of Coers, David, who is here portrayed from the back.
Another key figure in this series is his cousin Jens, whose parents made the decision to relocate to Spain, close to the place Sander and Jens frequented during their childhood. Jens's presence becomes the foundation upon which the narrative unfolds, with his face often being the only face fully visible to viewers. Thus, Blue Mood (Al Mar) simultaneously becomes a personal, intimate document and a universally relatable tale.
ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Sander Coers (1997, NL) is a Rotterdam-based artist working with photography. Through a tender gaze, he seeks to establish new perceptions of masculinity by visualizing, revisiting and (de)constructing memories in melancholic and highly romanticized worlds, often filled with symbolism referring to male visual culture. His work balances between documentary and fiction, portraying real people, places and their stories within fantastical realities.
Coers has a visual language that is strongly inspired by memories of his youth in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, which he evokes visually through stills, portraits and landscapes that possess a cinematic quality. With the coming-of-age theme being recurrent throughout his work, he reflects on stories of love, friendship and self-acceptance, collected from his friends and peers.
He received his BA with honours of Photography from Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam in 2021. His graduation project Come Home was selected for Best of Graduates 2021, nominated for the Rabobank Portrait Prize and published (inter)nationally. He won the RM Photo Award before being selected as Rising Star of 2022 by Dutch newspaper NRC and nominated for the Palm Photo Prize in London, UK. Coers’ work has been acquired by the collections of the Rabobank, Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and various private collections.
Sander Coers is one of the Foam Talents of 2024-2025 and his work was part of the Foam Talent exhibition that was on display in 2024 in Foam.
