ABOUT THE WORK
Takashi Kawashima probes responses to grief and trauma caused by natural disasters. In Unfinished Topography/Collection Kawashima uses photography as a way of making sense of catastrophic events and how national memory is collectively shaped by these occurrences. The series focuses on volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis as sources of rupture and uses personal stories and recollections as a method of reconciling these events. Takashi’s images of volcano craters, ash and devastation are woven into narratives that also make use of found imagery and images taken from the internet. The volcano, as a symbol, has had a place in Japanese history since its formation. In focusing on these elemental objects laden with spiritual meaning, Takashi is adding to the narrative and folklore of Japan in the form of contemporary myth.
