ABOUT THE WORK
The series The Wake of Dust focuses on memory and the way it is preserved, archived and reconstructed. The grainy, black–and-white images jump backwards and forwards through time. Different generations of the same family are brought face to face and their gazes are either made to cross each other or are erased, hidden from view. The appropriation of the images through their manipulation modifies their meaning to tread a line between fact and fiction. As an architect of memory, Thomas Hauser deconstructs the idea of the archive, putting the pictures through a degradation and abstraction process that drives them away from any identifiable kind of narrative. His work conceptually also extends to sculpture and film as the artist adapts cinematic editing and time-fragmentation techniques.
The Hugo works are printed on silver photo paper and the colour of the prints therefore is subject to small changes over time.
