ABOUT THE WORK
This work was selected by Viviane Sassen and Foam Editions in celebration of the solo exhibition PHOSPHOR: Art & Fashion, which is on show at Foam until January 2025.
The exhibition comprises more than 200 works of the Dutch fashion photographer and artist Viviane Sassen. It is the first large-scale retrospective of the Dutch fashion photographer in the Netherlands, revealing over thirty years of her multifaceted career and bringing together photography, collage, painting and video.
This work was made in 2012 when Viviane Sassen travelled to the South of France with her friend and model Marte Mei van Haaster. It was the start of Sassen's research in shadow, which later resulted in the series Umbra (Latin for shadow). She experimented with perspex and sunlight, creating coloured shadows, saying: "the shadow is not only black, but has endless variations".
This specific work was shot on the riverbank of one of the many rivers of the Cevennen.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
The Dutch contemporary artist Viviane Sassen rapidly gained worldwide recognition, both in the fashion industry and in the photography world. Her oeuvre explores both the depths of human emotion and the boundaries of artistic expression. Death, sexuality, desire and connection with others are all motifs that structure her work. Renowned for her adept use of saturated colours, mastery of light and shadow, and distinctive depictions of the human body, Sassen's work is a testament to her artistic language. For Sassen, photography is a magical medium. For her, photography is like a mirror that reflects what is already inside us, and likewise a portal to another universe with infinite possibilities.
Sassen was born in 1972 in Amsterdam, the city where she currently lives. She studied fashion design, followed by photography at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) and Ateliers Arnhem.
Solo exhibitions have taken place at, among others, Fotografiska (2017); the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg (2017); the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago (2017); ICA, London (2015); Nederlands Fotomuseum, Rotterdam (2014) and Huis Marseille, Amsterdam (2012). Sassen was included on the main exhibition of the 55th Venice Biennale, The Encyclopedic Palace, in 2013. She has exhibited in notable group shows at, among others the Pulitzer Arts Foundation (2017); Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (2017); Museum für Neue Kunst Freiburg, Germany (2016); and New Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2011).
Sassen was awarded the Dutch art prize, the Prix de Rome, in 2007, and in 2011 won the International Center of Photography in New York's Infinity Award for Applied/Fashion/Advertising Photography. In 2015 she was awarded the David Octavius Hill Medal from the German Photography Academy, and was nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize for her exhibition Umbra. She has also received numerous awards for her publications.
