ABOUT THE WORK
This work is part of the series Half Empty Half Full from 2019, which clearly shows the versatility of young photographer Vytautas Kumža. The stylized studio photos reveal the creative process and play with the authenticity of photographic images. A large, sculptural version of this image can be seen in Villa Mondriaan in Winterswijk until 22 September.
ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Vytautas Kumža (1992) is a Lithuanian-born, Amsterdam-based photographer who graduated from Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 2017. He also studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. In 2016 he was nominated for the European Photography Award and in 2017 for the StartPoint Prize. In 2018 he was shortlisted for the Dutch National Photography Portrait Talent Award. Over the past years his works were shown at Fondazione Fotografia Modena, the National Gallery in Prague, Showroom MAMA, Rotterdam, Villa Mondriaan in Winterswijk and several art fairs in Amsterdam.
In his photography Kumža uses many different techniques and materials, from theatre set constructions to adaptations of analogue photography for contemporary photography. Usually, the spatial sculptures or installations that are photographed only create a harmonious view from a certain point of view. He encourages the viewer to cypher the visual implications and possible narratives. As we are now used to massive amounts of visual feeds, Kumža sets various ‘obstacles’, which show that the work was constructed with analogue visual manipulations. He is interested in how images communicate, depending on their context.
