Foam Magazine #15: Construct

This issue explores work that features a reality constructed by the photographer. Presenting six diverse portfolios, where the work is either actual structures in a space or photographic constructs in a flat plane. In an era when it is possible to conjure up a conceivable image by digital manipulation, this work makes the construct in an analogue form.

Myoung Ho Lee makes us look at trees, one at a time, in their natural surroundings in Tree. Lee isolates each tree from its immediate environment using a large white canvas backdrop. Entirely from memory Thomas Demand reconstructs six different views of spaces in the embassy of the Republic of Niger in his project Embassy. Martina Sauter mixes the pleasure of observing together with the emotional implications of being a spectator, in her series Double, the conventional view of everyday things is subverted with suspense.

Also included, an extensive interview with Sunhee Kim talking about bringing China’s art back down to earth and back to public accessibility. Plus an ‘On My Mind’ feature from 6 cultural figures talking about images on their minds and plenty of book reviews.
