Foam Magazine #18: Displaced

Depending on the situation, displacement can be called upon as refugees, asylum-seekers, immigrants, illegals or interlopers, their status uncertain much like their future. Featuring five portfolios by photographers who are attempting to relate to this immense and complex set of problems. Through imagery and forms of presentation, these works seek out new ways to address an audience, in a way that does justice to both the scale of the problem and to some extremely personal, often tragic stories.

Specially compiled for Foam Magazine, Jim Goldberg’s How I Dream is printed on foldout pages, a selection of images mixed with text that entwines stories of migrants seeking refuge in Europe, documenting the harsh and frequently heart-breaking reality of displacement. The Missing is the latest development in Dana Popa’s Not Natasha project, the base of which focused on trafficked girls, this latest development focuses on the families who wait for years, often in vain for any sign of the girls coming home.

Also included, an extensive interview with Francis Hodgson, Head of Photographs at Sotheby’s London discussing collecting contemporary photography and the need for photographic scholarships. Plus an ‘On My Mind’ feature from 6 cultural figures talking about images on their minds plus plenty of book reviews.
