Foam Magazine #21: Merge

With such a close relationship between photography and other media, there are often new unexpected manifestations which shine a light on the nature and substance of the medium and places known certainties under discussion. This form of bonding is explored in this issue, featuring eight portfolios that showcase photography’s relationship with other mediums in surprising and inspiring ways.

Using fiction as a means of visualization Nickel van Duijvenboden reflects, in this entirely text-based portfolio The Grand Absence / Plateau, on images and boundaries of the medium of photography. With black ink, water and great precision, Gunnel Whålstrand meticulously reconstructs the life of the father she never got a chance to know. Naoya Hatakeyama’s series Scales is an attempt to investigate how architecture and three-dimensionality can be translated onto a flat surface.

Also included, an extensive interview with educator, editor and author Fred Ritchin discussing with Brian Palmer about the digital revolution. Plus an ‘On My Mind’ feature from 6 cultural figures talking about images on their minds and plenty of book reviews.
