Examining the relationship between photography and referencing, this issue presents eight portfolios that each in their own way reference other images. Investigating referencing from cliché to influence, familiarity to recreation, iconic to reimagined, referencing takes centre point in all these portfolios. Exploring to what degree photography can actually be autonomous, all these portfolios recognize that nothing can be created from splendid isolation.
After creating Every Building on Sunset Strip 31 years ago, Ed Ruscha went back to photograph the same route, this time photographing every building on sunset boulevard in colour to create Then & Now. Embracing photographic clichés in The Great Unreal Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs tackle American landscapes with humour and irony, producing a pastiche of admiration and reflection. Alex Pragers meticulously staged images produce an ominous familiarity, never directly replicating her subtle references leave you wondering: where do I know this from? It is that mental process, that is the very essence of this issue.
Also included, an extensive interview with the extraordinary film maker and photography lover Wim Wenders where he talks about what moves him about photography, how Walker Evans influenced his work and why he always talks about places. Plus an ‘On My Mind’ feature from 6 cultural figures talking about images on their minds and plenty of book reviews.
