ABOUT THE WORK
Popel Coumou works primarily with photo collages. Her images consist of layers of paper, photographs, drawings, sculptural clay or cloth – that work to conceal or alternatively emphasize elements of the final image. She subsequently lights and photographs these collages with an analogue camera. Coumou blows up the resulting negatives to large, grainy photo prints.

‘My work is treading a very fine line between architectural forms, inner tension and emotion. I always try to remove all the superfluous elements in order to get to the heart of the image. By showing little, a lot can be hinted at.’ - Popel Coumou.

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Popel Coumou (b. 1978) graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2004 at the photography department. Since then she is working on two-dimensional photo collages to create her own world. In her work she is looking for the tension between strict lines and shapes in architecture and the shapes of nature, of creations we cannot control. Coumou has been nominated for the Shell Young Art Awards, the Foam Paul Huf Award, the Mercure Culture Award among others.

Coumou is represented by Torch Gallery, Amsterdam. Her work has been shown at Foam and many venues all over the world, like LMAKgallery (New York, USA), Aando Fine Art (Berlin, DE) and Cultuurcentrum (Mechelen, BE). Coumou's photographs are part of many significant collections in the Netherlands, such as Museum Het Domein Sittard, Foam, Huis Marseille and Het Gemeente Museum Den Haag.
