ABOUT THE WORK
Popel Coumou works primarily with photo collages. Her images consists of layers of paper, photographs, drawings, sculptural clay or cloth – that work to conceal or alternatively emphasize elements of the final image. She subsequently lights and photographs these collages with an analogue camera. Coumou blows up the resulting negatives to large, grainy photo prints.

'My work is treading a very fine line between architectural forms, inner tension and emotion. I always try to remove all the superfluous elements in order to get to the heart of the image. By showing little, a lot can be hinted at.' - Popel Coumou

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Her work has been shown at Foam and many venues across the world, like LMAKgallery (New York, USA), Aando Fine Art (Berlin, DE) and Cultuurcentrum (Mechelen, BE).
