About the work
This is the famous Jumpman photo of Michael Jordan, recognized by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential images of all time.
"In 1984, LIFE magazine commissioned Co Rentmeester to photograph a number of American athletes—all medal contenders for the upcoming Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Among them were a runner, a cyclist, a weightlifter, and a basketball player who was about to rise to global prominence: Michael Jordan. Using his Hasselblad camera, Rentmeester took just 19 shots—less than two rolls of twelve. One of those photographs, now widely known as Jumpman, was later named by TIME as one of the 100 most influential photographs of all time."
Excerpt from the text written by Aernoud Bourdrez, published in the book Witnessing Life, about the career of Co Rentmeester.

In 2024, director Tom Dey made the documentary Jumpman, which traces the legal battle over Nike using Co Rentmeester’s iconic image as the inspiration for its Jordan brand logo.

About the photographer
Co Rentmeester (1936, NL) is one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. As a pioneer of photojournalism as well as commercial photography, Rentmeester has shaped our collective visual memory with iconic images such as his famous Jumpman photo of Michael Jordan.  He won a World Press Photo Award twice, including one with the very first color photograph ever to win the top prize. Rentmeester refused to conform to the visual codes of his time. He regarded color as a moral choice, the camera as a means for reflection, and each image as a proposition.

The exhibition Witnessing Life is on show at Foam from 10 October until 11 February 2026. It reflects on Rentmeester’s unique ability to transcend genres, leaving a profound impact on journalistic, commercial and artistic photography. From his compelling war photography of the Vietnam war and the Watts riots, his wildlife photography to his groundbreaking Marlboro Man campaigns, that redefined the visual identity of America. This exhibition not only celebrates Rentmeester’s remarkable career but also marks his symbolic return to Amsterdam, the city where his journey as a photographer began.
