About the work
Portraited is famous photographer Inez van Lamsweerde, taken with a 4x5 inch speedgraphic camera. The image was made for the announcement of an exhibition of her work. Breukel and Van Lamsweerde met at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, where he started his Photography studies at the moment that she graduated. Together with Vinoodh Matadin she became an artist duo, mixing commercial fashion photography with free work. In the nineties Van Lamsweerde/Matadin made several successful series of free work and the duo exhibited internationally. Nowadays they mostly work on assignment. 
This work was part of the exhibition Meet the Artist, an exhibition at Foam (early 2025) that offered a special glimpse into the life and work of one of the Netherlands’ most renowned portrait photographers, Koos Breukel. The exhibition showcased an overview of his career, focusing on the people who have significantly influenced his development as both a photographer and a person. 

About the photographer
Koos Breukel (1962, NL) is a Dutch portrait photographer, living and working in Amsterdam. 
His photographs are known for their ability to capture the everyday and the coincidental, with attention to vulnerability and authenticity. His portraits are often shot with analogue cameras and have a timeless and pure appearance. Thanks to Breukel's empathetic approach and the creation of an atmosphere of mutual trust, his subjects dare to be vulnerable, which is reflected in the photos.
Breukel exhibits his work internationally and he has published several photobooks.
