About the work
"This picture took time to make: an exposure of more than an hour. I needed absolute stillness. There was no sound. I think of it as collapsing time onto a sheet of film held in a large-format plate camera. I opened the shutter, locked it open, then sat down quietly and waited. This series stands in stark contrast to the idea of photography as a 'decisive moment'.
This title of the series, Colour Fields, is taken from the term colour field painting, used by Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still, and Mark Rothko (among others) to describe the stripping away of figuration in order to evoke meditative responses to what is largely unseen, yet available to the senses. I work to reveal just enough; the lit area fading into blackness, I hope, invokes the mystery of the unseen and unknown, leaving the viewer to wonder what dangers or secrets lie waiting in the vast, impenetrable darkness."
About the photographer
Nadav Kander is a London-based artist and director, internationally acclaimed for his portraiture and large-format landscape photographs. He began taking photographs at the age of 13. Kander has received numerous awards and honours. In 2009, shortly after the inauguration of Barack Obama, Kander was commissioned by The New York Times Magazine to produce a landmark series of fifty-two portraits of members of the Obama administration — the largest number of portraits by a single photographer ever published in one issue of the magazine.
His work is held in major public collections, including the National Portrait Gallery in London; Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago; The Frank-Suss Collection, London, New York and Hong Kong.
