About this work
This photograph features Rita Loonen—better known as Bonny Huf—whom Paul Huf met during a shoot for Peter Stuyvesant cigarettes. She was one of the Netherlands’ first professional models and later became his wife and lifelong muse. The image was taken in 1961 during a campaign shoot for Jolo Couture in Breukelen, near Utrecht.
About the photographer
Paul Huf (1924–2002) remains one of the most celebrated Dutch photographers. Known for his glamorous portraits and advertising work—such as the iconic Craftsmanship is Mastery campaign for Grolsch—Huf gave his images an almost cinematic flair. His 1954 series of colourful record sleeves for Philips became legendary and even inspired a song by Annie M.G. Schmidt.
In addition to photography, Huf made films, including a documentary on painter Carel Willink. In 2000, the Rijksmuseum established the Paul Huf Fund in his honour. A year later, he played a key role in founding Foam. To celebrate his legacy, the Foam Paul Huf Award was launched in 2007 to support emerging international talent, with past winners including Pieter Hugo, Alex Prager and Hiền Hoà ng.
