About the work
Ruth van Beek lives and works in Koog aan de Zaan, the Netherlands. In her work she uses the conventional visual codes of photography to trick the viewers into a belief in the importance of the concerning object, even if the object is not identifiable. She has collected a ton of photographic material which she archived in her home and where she arranges existing photo’s in constantly changing manners. The main source for her quirky and playful collages are books and magazines, dating back to 1950 – 1980, often found in thrift shops across Europe and the States. By adding shapes, cutting and folding and merge found pictures together, she makes new visual connections. The images show smiling trees, carefully cut and pasted guinea pigs, houseplants covered with snow or old photographs pieced together. In new and absurd ways, Ruth creates new work, often received with an unsettling or comical effect.
