About the work
This project A Home With No Roof is about the home where Sara de Brito Faustino grew up, a place where strangeness and the familiarity of the ordinary existed alongside. Being an intimate space, it should have been nurturing and reassuring. And yet, it was the scene of painful scenes.
"In A Home With No Roof, she sublimates her experience of domestic abuse, in a turbulent collision of dreams and memories. Based on a meticulous 1:12-scale model reconstruction of her childhood home, the camera traces the detritus of domestic life made miniature. Scenes are familiar, yet nothing is quite right. (...) Fragments of bodies erupt unexpectedly, sometimes grossly oversized and at other times deflated and hollow. The glint of stacks of dishes and spilt coffee moves your eye, for an instant, away from the artist’s figure, a looming presence, both dominant and awkward, amongst a sea of unease."

About the photographer
Based in Lausanne, Switzerland, Sara de Brito Faustino has been working with the photographic medium for more than 10 years. After graduating from ECAL (University of Art and Design, Lausanne) with a Bachelor’s degree in 2023, she completed a two-year position as a teaching assistant at the same academy. At the core of her practice, she explores the materiality of objects and the body, highlighting textures, colors, folds, wrinkles, fissures, strengths and weaknesses. Her artistic approach, infused with emotions, is focused on the intimate; self-portraiture and intimate space; home. Beyond technique, she uses photography as a way to transcend and question (her) reality, shaped by a tumultuous personal history. Everyday subjects and objects, mundane elements, are her preferred focus. She aims to assemble them in a way that they don’t translate a vision of the ordinary but of the extraordinary. She transforms her daily life or past experiences into a theatrical stage on which she plays/reenacts her own story.
Sara de Brito Faustino was selected as a Foam Talent in 2026. Her work is part of the Foam Talent exhibition which is on show at Foam until 28 August 2026.
